Monomoy Girl Will Star on Churchill’s Opening Day

Champion filly Monomoy Girl is entered for her first start since winning the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Distaff back at Churchill Downs, where she’s the lead attraction on opening Saturday of the Spring Meet.

The multiple Grade 1 winner, who also won the Kentucky Oaks under the Twin Spires, will face six rivals in a one-mile allowance optional claiming race going from the No. 2 hold under jockey Florent Geroux.

Brad Cox trains the 5-year-old daughter of Tapizar, who has won nine of 11 career starts with earnings of $2,954,750. Her ownership group includes Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, the Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables.

Monomoy Girl missed the 2019 season due to a series of setbacks — first a bout of colic in the spring before a muscle strain sidelined her again later that fall. She has worked consistently down the road at Keeneland toward this return.
